3 Things to Think About Before Starting a Remodel
Starting any remodeling project for the first time can be a daunting experience, from picking selections to applying for a permit, there are many details to consider. For that reason, it is important to take some time to plan and map out certain goals before jumping right into your project since it can save you from many headaches later, as well as helping you keep your remodeling project from running wild. Whether you are thinking about working with a contractor, or completing a home remodel by yourself, there are three things you should always think about prior to starting your project which are knowing your overall
budget, your wants vs. your needs, and lastly your long-term goals.
Budget
One of the most important things to think about before starting a remodeling project is knowing your budget for the project. This may seem like an obvious starting point in the remodeling design process; however, your budget range should be locked in from the first second you begin your project. Many people often prefer to go with the flow and figure it out as they go, but that is usually a quick way for people to go over budget or spend more than they originally desired too. By knowing your budget prior to starting your project, it lets you to know what prices you must stay under during your selection process for fixtures, appliances, hardware, etc., instead of finding out after the fact that those selections cost more than you can afford.
Wants Vs. Needs
Everybody has dreamed of having a bathroom with a spa bathtub, or a kitchen with a designer wine fridge at least once in their lifetime. However, when you are thinking of starting a remodeling project, you should think about what items you truly need, and what items are just wants that you desire to have. This is not to say that you cannot have a spa bathtub, or a wine fridge, but a reminder to be aware during your selection process to prioritize design elements and remodels that suit your everyday lifestyle. Everyone has different priorities, and because of that all our wants and needs are very different from one another’s.
Long-term Goals
Likewise to being aware of your wants versus your needs in a remodeling project, it is important to think of the long-term goals you hope to get out of this project. For example, if you are planning to complete a bathroom remodel, you should think about how the changes will bring about ease or comfort to your everyday routines. You might love to have a bathtub installed in a small bathroom, but a spacious shower might be more practical and beneficial in the long-term since you may utilize that more often than a tub. Although, like your wants vs. needs, everyone has their own personal long-term goals of what they hope
to get out of their house, which is what makes everyone’s homes so uniquely their own.
